See my other post about how this is a 30,000 year event.
In fact, it’s probably the worst disaster of this sort seen in on this content since before recorded history.
With that in mind, here are some places to donate to. Compiled by my friend Mia Hetényi.
- Beloved Asheville is regularly filling up their trucks with food, water and gas and distributing it in Asheville. Donations go directly to funding the food, water and supplies they are bringing. https://www.facebook.com/BeLovedAsheville
- Additionally, Mountain Mule Packer Ranch are taking strings of pack mules with supplies to hard hit areas that are not accessible by any other way. https://www.facebook.com/mountainmulepackersranch/
- Operation Airdrop is providing direct disaster relief to communities most impacted by this storm. They are based in North Carolina. https://www.operation-airdrop.com/hurricane-helene
- Likewise, the Cajun Navy 2016 is bringing supplies directly to the people. https://www.facebook.com/cajunnavy2016.org
- Grassroots Aid Partnership – Another local, grassroots org that is cooking meals locally sourced and distributing in Asheville. https://www.facebook.com/grassrootsaidpartnership
- Hearts with Hands disaster relief in Asheville – https://www.heartswithhands.org/
- In addition, Asheville Dream center is setting up a large distribution center of supplies at the Asheville Mall. Donate at – https://ashevilledreamcenter.org/
- World Central Kitchen (not local, but doing direct relief work on the ground) is cooking warm meals daily and distributing in many of the effected areas, not just Ashville.
- Here is a link to their website, and it looks like you can specify in the comments where you want the funds to go – https://wck.org/
- Mutual aid organization: https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising
I have not investigated the above places and cannot personally vouch for them but they seem worthwhile to me, especially since folks have been asking.
Furthermore, I’m adding my own here that I do trust and vouch for:
- Earthaven Ecovillage is in dire need. To stay updated, you can get updates by subscribing to their newsletter or checkout their Facebook page. I lived there for 25 years and it was hit hard. Their go-fund-me is the top of priority for me to share. Please donate as much as you can. https://www.gofundme.com/…/support-earthavens-recovery…
- I’m oriented towards grassroots organizations that are actually related to people and projects. For that reason, I recommend Cooperate WNC, a mutual aid organization that does just that. https://cooperatewnc.org
To conclude, Hurricane Helene ravaged Asheville, NC and the surrounding Western NC area on September 27, 2024. This post was created in response to that devastation and helping our community find its way towards recovery and wholeness.
